August 2016 marked a monumental month for Parkinson's disease in the US. The National Parkinson's Foundation and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation merged to form the Parkinson's Foundation. The mission of the Parkinson’s Foundation is to invest in promising scientific research that will end Parkinson’s disease and improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s, and their families, through improved treatments, support and the best care. This merger ensures that the Parkinson's community can continue to grow a national network of research, treatment, and support centers. The ultimate objective is to save more lives by educating more people and reaching out to untapped groups who are in need. The Parkinson's Foundation will offer people with Parkinson's and their families the best treatment and educational resources and support available, while actively fighting to eradicate a disease that currently plagues as many as one million Americans and perhaps 15 million people worldwide. The combined experience and resources of the two groups will go a long way toward achieving these goals. It is the mission of the Midwest Parkinson's Initiative to work with the PF to support and pursue those goals locally. If you would like to support these goals, please visit our donate page. With this merger, we are hopeful that the rural communities that are disproportionately affected by this disease will get the support and acknowledgement that they deserve.
